The new dotCMS 4.0 intuitive interface means your team can be more efficient and productive.

Our strategic partner, dotCMS, launched a new UI. Using Angular 2 to build out a single page app layout, and inspired by Google Material Design, dotCMS 4.0 now offers a completely new UI / UX. The new, intuitive interface means your team can be more efficient and productive.

How did this come to life?

DotCMS did not want to be one of those software vendors that comes out with a fresh new look without thinking about what their customers want. They followed an agile process, which means they worked through iterative, incremental cycles to build out their design. These cycles consist of discovery, design, development, and testing to understand where they need to improve on from continuous feedback.

What’s different?

You wouldn’t know to look, but the new UI was created using the Angular 2 framework. This framework is lightweight and developer friendly, therefore allowing the development team to start on the project right away. Besides the improved performance and speed it brings, Angular 2 allows dotCMS to separate the UI from the backend and move to web services, which makes this developer friendly.

The new UI is built as a single page app experience that allows users to easily navigate without having multiple tabs open. The single page app provides users with a cleaner layout, consistent menus, top bar notifications, quick links, and improvement to the overall performance and ease of use.

Users can now also preview their content in mobile view - this means that DotCMS now provides a fully manageable and customizable device preview for your content.

With features, process, and framework all coming together, the team wanted to ensure that the new UI was inspirational, innovative, and overall follows the principles of good design for their users. They were inspired by Google’s Material Design and wanted to ensure the new UI reflects it.

The goal of Material Design is to “create a visual language that synthesizes classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.” dotCMS uses these design principles to meet their goals and objectives for how to handle user interactions in regards to motion, depth, fundamentals of light, content hierarchy, and more.
